Are you smarter than the monkey?
Thursday, July 19th, 2007I play a PC game, the title: TROPIX
It’s fun, so many choices of island
to be visited for games.
It begins with the monkey stranded
on an island, just accompanied with
a crab, and a raft to move around.
The objective is to win games,
earn money (Sand dollars, the currency
in the game) and buy things to make
the island complete.
Then buy new island, there are four more
islands which cost a lot.
In each islands, the monkey must choose
what must be purchased firstly.
Three categories are there:
FOOD
FUN
COMFORT
My first attempt of purchase is BANANA,
but soon the monkey ate it and …
all is gone!
Then I played more, I buy some comfort,
by adding coconut tree and rock.
Then beach bench, umbrella, hammock,
hut, shelter, etc.
And for fun, there are hats, beach balls,
kite, sandcastle, firebon, etc.
What’s the lesson the monkey gave me?
To earn more and more money with
less time spent on playing games,
it is strongly encouraged to buy…
TREES!
Why? Yeah, it’s more expensive than
buying fruit. But in every 5 seconds,
the tree will bring out new fruits,
endlessly! All the monkey must do is to
approach and pick those fruits.
I make comparison of price.
In the first island, banana tree is 500
and to buy banana from the computer is
50 each. But if we sell banana,
the computer bid randomly around
the price of 20 until 40.
In second island, buy pineapple 100,
to sell it would cost 50 until 80.
And the tree is 500
3rd island, starfruit is 150 each,
and we can ask the computer to buy
around 80 to 120. the tree is 500
The 5th island, papaya tree is 5000
each fruit is 300 and if we sell it, the
computer give the price around 150 until
200.
The most expensive is PERSIMMON fruit
in 4th island, buy from computer is 500
and sell it, we’ll get around 200 to 400.
And the tree is 3000
Trees are more expensive than fruits,
but it can give the monkey
unlimited supply of fruits!
What about the FUN and COMFORT things?
Everything we buy, will be decreasing
in price if we sell it again to
the computer.
OK… this is a computer game,
why take it seriously?
You suppose to collect money from
winning games, not as a gardener.
Winning each game, it took around
10 minutes and we would win around 500.
Also there are other way to earn
quick and sometime big money:
By sending postcard, by making
photo of the monkey in the island.
If we can create creative scene or
‘caught’ the monkey in action
(jumping, swinging, etc) then we’ll
earn bigger money.
That’s artistic stuff, the price
can fluctuate… based on the taste
of the market, very subjective!
I took two almost the same photo
of the monkey, but the price can be
so much different! One is valued 5000
the other next is 50
That’s what happen when you create
painting, carve or sculpture statue
or write a novel.
You’ll never know whether you’ll
be a rich celebrity or a frustrated
wanna-be artist.
So I realize that the monkey must
earn money from buying trees, sell
the fruits, then buy more trees,
make more and more fruits, sell more
and more…
And that’s the secret of me, making
the monkey as the richest in the island.
I compare my profit with my colleagues
in the office.
Some of them are enjoying the game,
some then are allured to do my way.
We must make priority. BUY TREES,
the beach-balls, fire-cracker, toys,
hat, etc… have them later!
Cause those things, yes it gives added
value on COMFORT and FUN, but can’t
breed more money!
If you sell it again, let’s compare
UMBRELLA, buy 600, sell again only 350
HAMMOCK, the price dropped into 1500
to be sold again, from once 2500
LANTERN, initially 1500 and can only be
valued 800 in second hand market.
That’s what we call depreciation!
The trees, in the real world,
we must also buy fertilizer and
take care of them.
But in the games, I learned the
system, automatically every 5 seconds
give you fruits!
Buy trees, wait and… sell those fruits!
I have 15 persimmon trees!
and… every 5 seconds I can get around
5000, and I don’t have to play more
games just to get money.
But those are island of games,
the purpose is… to play!
Yeah… let’s take the lesson for
real life!
Many of us work (play games, it’s what
to monkey must do in the island)
and earn some money.
Then what?
Throwing money to earn some useful
things, of course. Or food, or go
shopping, watch at cinemas, buy
electronic gadgets, toys, going
on vacation, etc.
If you spend money only on those…
you’ll soon get to zero point at the
end of the month, and earn monthly
payment again… spend all again…
and work again… get paid again…
spend all again… again… again…
But… if you buy TREES, we can translate
this as ASSET (everything that can
create money), you’ll earn more
and don’t have to rely only on your
monthly payment!
MODAL… in Indonesian, can be translated
as ASSET or CAPITAL. Capital is more
on the cash, loan, credit or the money!
ASSET is the tools and skills which
are significant to earn money.
For a musician, the guitar, keyboard,
or drumsticks and the set; are the asset!
For a badminton athelte, the racket and
shoes are essential!
So what must you buy?
Buy things that can be useful to
enhance your skill, talent and
potential!
If you buy a fishing rod, and
you only go to the beach once a year,
then it’s for FUN, it’s just a hobby.
If you buy a golf-stick, and practice
daily and join competition and
challenge Tiger Wood, and can outwit
him with a hole-in-one (pure luck
or really skillful you?) then your
purchase is an ASSET, cause you’ll
win prize money.
If you buy a house to be your home,
then you have to pay monthly bills
(water, electricity, phone, tax, etc)
It is a BURDEN, yes, but…
it gives you COMFORT!
Next…if you have extra money and buy
another house, and rent it… you’ll
get money, and it can be your ASSET
But if you waste your money every
Friday and Saturday nights on
night-clubs for several glasses of beer
which cost 5 times more expensive
than in an ordinary bottle package
in any supermarket …
FUN?
No, it’s not.. when you vomit on the bed
and woke-up feeling "Am I still alive?"
Or you eat at a classy restaurant
which sells a piece of steak 10 times more
expensive than a kilo of beef
you can get from local shop-market?
What do you call it?
LUXURY?
Maybe, but consider it when your bank
send a debt-collector to pursue you to
pay the credit-card!
Or… buying fire-crackers, so awesome
to see those flashes at the sky,
but if you do it every night, you’ll
be broke and yes… your neighbors
which once so entertained will be bored
and will ask you to stop those noises!
To everything, there’s a limit!
Where the fun can no longer be fun,
or when comfort must end… just as
suddenly you find your house-roof is
leaking and you must repair it.
Or when your car engines need to be
replaced! Or also when the cool air
has dropped and you must pay for annual
service and cleaning of your AC.
Yeah, so the monkey gave us a very
important lesson!
Buy TREES, that can give us FRUITS.
Plant your TALENT, equipped with
TOOLS and make money!
Go to schools, courses, colleges.
And… most important is, earn the lesson!
The sheet of paper called certificate
is just a symbol. What you keep
under your hat, that’s what matters!
Or simply buy books, join seminar.
And… read it, then offer your friends
to listen you talk, make your own seminar.
Or play games! Just as I did…
And… earn wisdom from that, and post
it here in the blog.
Or read this blog!
And… spread to your friends about
this page.
And it will sharpen your mind…
And then …
<tell me what’s on your mind now?>
It’s about INVESTMENT!
How to make money…
Save it in bank account or deposit?
Yes, but monthly administration fee
can hurt you if you have less than
10 million rupiahs.
Bank account gives COMFORT, it makes
us easier to do transaction. It can
be FOOD, if your money is big enough
so that the interest rate will feed you.
Oh, sorry.. I have to remind you,
there’s tax also. It maybe…just maybe,
gives you FUN, if you can win
three-monthly sweepstakes or prize.
But all depends on luck! You’ll never
know who’ll drive the car as 1st prize.
How about gambling?
I’ve explained you the rule in
every casino… see in the previous BLOG
-How to earn richness?
-How to become richer?
Doing charity? Or paying your religious
alms, donation, tithe, or feeding and
paying for the school of the kids
in orphanage? or in the third world
countries?
Yes… it’s a good thing!
GOD sees that and HE will repay your
kindness.
But we must see this kind of act,
as GIVING AWAY MONEY.
Of course, some of us believe that
it is EARNING MORE MONEY for the future.
GOD will give more blessing as you
bless others with your richness.
Some said, it is the right of GOD,
so that the clergymen or priests
can also eat, and concentrate themselves
to serve GOD in the temple.
So we are DOING OUR OBLIGATION,
as it’s already written.
Or just showing kindness, and that’s it.
Or build positive image about you
or your company in the society.
In the end, it’s becoming an asset
as people will respect you and want
to do business with you as they see
you as a kind person.
You can believe either way.
Be generous, yes… but don’t be a fool.
Don’t use your charity to insist
GOD in your prayers (or those orphans
to pray for you) to grant you
instant richness!
GOD doesn’t create money on trees.
Fruits grow there, and you need hands
to harvest them and sell them to
the market.
GOD creates worms to be the food
for chickens and birds. But they
have to dig around, scractch and
search around among the soil!
GOD never send the worms to climb
to trees and suddenly served in the nest.
GOD creates fishes, and fishermen
must build ship, throw their net
and pull it, with efforts!
An able fisherman must know the wind
direction (if the ship still using
traditional sail), and know which
is north and south.
Also having endurance against sea-wind
and constantly moving deck.
To earn maximum income (fish), he decided
to go to the water which he’s sure
-based on research, knowledge of
season, experience and intuition-
will contain a lot of fish,
AND… choose the moment, to make
sure he can return home safely.
So?
Know the risk of what you’re doing.
Then think…is it worth of the income?
Which water (job field or career) will
I sail into? Will there be fishes there?
How many fishermen are going to sail
there too? (your competitors, rivals
or contenders)
Do I have something special (talent)
or USP (unique selling proposition)
or added value that makes me deserved
to be paid more?
It depends on who you are and what
you are capable of!
I’ll have to leave you now…
I must check my monkey again!
