Are you smarter than the monkey?

Thursday, July 19th, 2007

I play a PC game, the title: TROPIX

http://gamehouse.com/

It’s fun, so many choices of island
to be visited for games.

It begins with the monkey stranded
on an island, just accompanied with
a crab, and a raft to move around.

The objective is to win games,
earn money (Sand dollars, the currency
in the game) and buy things to make
the island complete.

Then buy new island, there are four more
islands which cost a lot.

In each islands, the monkey must choose
what must be purchased firstly.

Three categories are there:

FOOD

FUN

COMFORT

My first attempt of purchase is BANANA,
but soon the monkey ate it and …
all is gone!

Then I played more, I buy some comfort,
by adding coconut tree and rock.

Then beach bench, umbrella, hammock,
hut, shelter, etc.

And for fun, there are hats, beach balls,
kite, sandcastle, firebon, etc.

What’s the lesson the monkey gave me?

To earn more and more money with
less time spent on playing games,
it is strongly encouraged to buy…

TREES!

Why? Yeah, it’s more expensive than
buying fruit. But in every 5 seconds,
the tree will bring out new fruits,
endlessly! All the monkey must do is to
approach and pick those fruits.

I make comparison of price.

In the first island, banana tree is 500
and to buy banana from the computer is
50 each. But if we sell banana,
the computer bid randomly around
the price of 20 until 40.

In second island, buy pineapple 100,
to sell it would cost 50 until 80.
And the tree is 500

3rd island, starfruit is 150 each,
and we can ask the computer to buy
around 80 to 120. the tree is 500

The 5th island, papaya tree is 5000
each fruit is 300 and if we sell it, the
computer give the price around 150 until
200.

The most expensive is PERSIMMON fruit
in 4th island, buy from computer is 500
and sell it, we’ll get around 200 to 400.
And the tree is 3000

Trees are more expensive than fruits,
but it can give the monkey
unlimited supply of fruits!

What about the FUN and COMFORT things?

Everything we buy, will be decreasing
in price if we sell it again to
the computer.

OK… this is a computer game,
why take it seriously?

You suppose to collect money from
winning games, not as a gardener.

Winning each game, it took around
10 minutes and we would win around 500.

Also there are other way to earn
quick and sometime big money:

By sending postcard, by making
photo of the monkey in the island.

If we can create creative scene or
‘caught’ the monkey in action
(jumping, swinging, etc) then we’ll
earn bigger money.

That’s artistic stuff, the price
can fluctuate… based on the taste
of the market, very subjective!

I took two almost the same photo
of the monkey, but the price can be
so much different! One is valued 5000
the other next is 50

That’s what happen when you create
painting, carve or sculpture statue
or write a novel.

You’ll never know whether you’ll
be a rich celebrity or a frustrated
wanna-be artist.

So I realize that the monkey must
earn money from buying trees, sell
the fruits, then buy more trees,
make more and more fruits, sell more
and more…

And that’s the secret of me, making
the monkey as the richest in the island.

I compare my profit with my colleagues
in the office.

Some of them are enjoying the game,
some then are allured to do my way.

We must make priority. BUY TREES,
the beach-balls, fire-cracker, toys,
hat, etc… have them later!

Cause those things, yes it gives added
value on COMFORT and FUN, but can’t
breed more money!

If you sell it again, let’s compare

UMBRELLA, buy 600, sell again only 350

HAMMOCK, the price dropped into 1500
to be sold again, from once 2500

LANTERN, initially 1500 and can only be
valued 800 in second hand market.

That’s what we call depreciation!

The trees, in the real world,
we must also buy fertilizer and
take care of them.

But in the games, I learned the
system, automatically every 5 seconds
give you fruits!

Buy trees, wait and… sell those fruits!

I have 15 persimmon trees!
and… every 5 seconds I can get around
5000, and I don’t have to play more
games just to get money.

But those are island of games,
the purpose is… to play!

Yeah… let’s take the lesson for
real life!

Many of us work (play games, it’s what
to monkey must do in the island)
and earn some money.

Then what?

Throwing money to earn some useful
things, of course. Or food, or go
shopping, watch at cinemas, buy
electronic gadgets, toys, going
on vacation, etc.

If you spend money only on those…
you’ll soon get to zero point at the
end of the month, and earn monthly
payment again… spend all again…
and work again… get paid again…
spend all again… again… again…

But… if you buy TREES, we can translate
this as ASSET (everything that can
create money), you’ll earn more
and don’t have to rely only on your
monthly payment!

MODAL… in Indonesian, can be translated
as ASSET or CAPITAL. Capital is more
on the cash, loan, credit or the money!
ASSET is the tools and skills which
are significant to earn money.

For a musician, the guitar, keyboard,
or drumsticks and the set; are the asset!

For a badminton athelte, the racket and
shoes are essential!

So what must you buy?

Buy things that can be useful to
enhance your skill, talent and
potential!

If you buy a fishing rod, and
you only go to the beach once a year,
then it’s for FUN, it’s just a hobby.

If you buy a golf-stick, and practice
daily and join competition and
challenge Tiger Wood, and can outwit
him with a hole-in-one (pure luck
or really skillful you?) then your
purchase is an ASSET, cause you’ll
win prize money.

If you buy a house to be your home,
then you have to pay monthly bills
(water, electricity, phone, tax, etc)
It is a BURDEN, yes, but…
it gives you COMFORT!

Next…if you have extra money and buy
another house, and rent it… you’ll
get money, and it can be your ASSET

But if you waste your money every
Friday and Saturday nights on
night-clubs for several glasses of beer
which cost 5 times more expensive
than in an ordinary bottle package
in any supermarket …

FUN?

No, it’s not.. when you vomit on the bed
and woke-up feeling "Am I still alive?"

Or you eat at a classy restaurant
which sells a piece of steak 10 times more
expensive than a kilo of beef
you can get from local shop-market?

What do you call it?

LUXURY?

Maybe, but consider it when your bank
send a debt-collector to pursue you to
pay the credit-card!

Or… buying fire-crackers, so awesome
to see those flashes at the sky,
but if you do it every night, you’ll
be broke and yes… your neighbors
which once so entertained will be bored
and will ask you to stop those noises!

To everything, there’s a limit!

Where the fun can no longer be fun,
or when comfort must end… just as
suddenly you find your house-roof is
leaking and you must repair it.

Or when your car engines need to be
replaced! Or also when the cool air
has dropped and you must pay for annual
service and cleaning of your AC.

Yeah, so the monkey gave us a very
important lesson!

Buy TREES, that can give us FRUITS.

Plant your TALENT, equipped with
TOOLS and make money!

Go to schools, courses, colleges.
And… most important is, earn the lesson!
The sheet of paper called certificate
is just a symbol. What you keep
under your hat, that’s what matters!

Or simply buy books, join seminar.
And… read it, then offer your friends
to listen you talk, make your own seminar.

Or play games! Just as I did…
And… earn wisdom from that, and post
it here in the blog.

Or read this blog!
And… spread to your friends about
this page.

And it will sharpen your mind…

And then …
<tell me what’s on your mind now?>

It’s about INVESTMENT!

How to make money…

Save it in bank account or deposit?

Yes, but monthly administration fee
can hurt you if you have less than
10 million rupiahs.

Bank account gives COMFORT, it makes
us easier to do transaction. It can
be FOOD, if your money is big enough
so that the interest rate will feed you.

Oh, sorry.. I have to remind you,
there’s tax also. It maybe…just maybe,
gives you FUN, if you can win
three-monthly sweepstakes or prize.
But all depends on luck! You’ll never
know who’ll drive the car as 1st prize.

How about gambling?

I’ve explained you the rule in
every casino… see in the previous BLOG
-How to earn richness?
-How to become richer?

Doing charity? Or paying your religious
alms, donation, tithe, or feeding and
paying for the school of the kids
in orphanage? or in the third world
countries?

Yes… it’s a good thing!
GOD sees that and HE will repay your
kindness.

But we must see this kind of act,
as GIVING AWAY MONEY.

Of course, some of us believe that
it is EARNING MORE MONEY for the future.
GOD will give more blessing as you
bless others with your richness.

Some said, it is the right of GOD,
so that the clergymen or priests
can also eat, and concentrate themselves
to serve GOD in the temple.
So we are DOING OUR OBLIGATION,
as it’s already written.

Or just showing kindness, and that’s it.

Or build positive image about you
or your company in the society.
In the end, it’s becoming an asset
as people will respect you and want
to do business with you as they see
you as a kind person.

You can believe either way.

Be generous, yes… but don’t be a fool.
Don’t use your charity to insist
GOD in your prayers (or those orphans
to pray for you) to grant you
instant richness!

GOD doesn’t create money on trees.
Fruits grow there, and you need hands
to harvest them and sell them to
the market.

GOD creates worms to be the food
for chickens and birds. But they
have to dig around, scractch and
search around among the soil!

GOD never send the worms to climb
to trees and suddenly served in the nest.

GOD creates fishes, and fishermen
must build ship, throw their net
and pull it, with efforts!

An able fisherman must know the wind
direction (if the ship still using
traditional sail), and know which
is north and south.

Also having endurance against sea-wind
and constantly moving deck.

To earn maximum income (fish), he decided
to go to the water which he’s sure
-based on research, knowledge of
season, experience and intuition-
will contain a lot of fish,
AND… choose the moment, to make
sure he can return home safely.

So?

Know the risk of what you’re doing.

Then think…is it worth of the income?

Which water (job field or career) will
I sail into? Will there be fishes there?
How many fishermen are going to sail
there too? (your competitors, rivals
or contenders)

Do I have something special (talent)
or USP (unique selling proposition)
or added value that makes me deserved
to be paid more?

It depends on who you are and what
you are capable of!

I’ll have to leave you now…

I must check my monkey again!

Men and women

Monday, July 9th, 2007

They’re so different.

There are problems in relationship.
It begins when both don’t understand
each other.

Either you’re single
(not looking for any,
expecting, or desperately searching),
dating (casually or romantically),
in serious relationship,
engaged or married; this blog would
be useful.

Ladies first…

No, wait! Boys first…

Hmmm…

Men like to compete, they build their
self esteem based on sucess they achieve.
It can be status, money, possesion, etc.

Women enjoy to cooperate, they build
relationship, warmth in friendship
and do their best to maintain harmony.

Of course, it’s very general…
Sometimes, there are males who act or
think like females, or otherwise.

Back to cavemen era, ooops… to be
fair, we’ll use "Cave people’s era"

Men go hunting, they provide food.
Women take care of kids, they give
sense of security and home.

Based on what you achieve… that’s
male’s instinct, that’s why they need
appreciation and support (to earn success)

While women, they want to be understood,
to be listened, and the support also.

Support for male: pat on shoulder,
technical skill lesson, money, words
of encouragement.

And for the ladies? Hmmm… they desire
a shoulder to cry on, tissue to wipe
their tears, words of acceptance,

And the advice…or lesson?
keep that later, after they’re calm.

Men can think OR feel, they knew the
difference.

While women think AND feel
at the same time… very confusing…

Men only see things as it is, matter
of fact.

Women can sense more,
it’s almost like sixth-sense,
they can understand what men can’t.

Let’s compare babies…

John, Frank, George, Alessandro…

They’re late in talking, but very
active in playing. They’re given
competitive toys such as: car, tank,
toy-gun, plastic sword, etc.

Patricia, Maria, Rachel, Sarah..

They talk earlier, the toys their
parents gave are to trigger their
instinct as future-mothers:
Dolls, Teddy bear, kitchen set.

After watching movies, males imagine
the action, explosions, fighting movement
and how pretty the ladies in the scene.
And… yeah, let’s admit it!

The romantic scene, the ‘action’ on bed.

Girls, of course they like handsome
actors, but they remember the dialogue
more than the actions.

And the romantic moments, shown with
whispers. kisses and gentle touches
done by the actor and actress.

It’s related to the difference in our
brains. It is innate, not constructed
by gender-bias or prejudice.

Men are trained to see, watch, be ready
and to act. Sometimes aggresively.

Women are encouraged to be kind, able to
listen and be sensitive to feeling of
others, detail changes, colors, etc.

When they want something, see how
they’re different! They both want
to eat at a restaurant…

Male:
-It’s lunch time, let’s eat

-We’ll be there for dinner, tonight, ok?

-Would you like a cup of coffee?

Female:
-Are you hungry? You should take
a lunch break, don’t work too hard
and forget your meal.

-I believe that the restaurant is
still open, would you like to try
to have a dinner there, how about tonight?

-If you don’t mind, would you like
to stop there? Maybe you need some rest
and… oh, a cup of coffee would be
refreshing for both of us.

Women talk more, not too direct,
giving suggestion.

Men speak in simple words and more
directing, leading or sometimes
commanding and not giving options.

Let’s see in the office…

Men are crazy about numbers, facts,
statistic, logical explanation and
make desicion based on analysis.

Women… of course, those data are
important, but instinct or intuition
can be true too. Sometimes we also
decide based on considerations.

Oh yeah, for several days, monthly,
women are so … hmmm…

Men, don’t try to understand, or
bother to show you care with words.
Just be silent, just listen, be there
for her, or let her be alone a while and
always prepare for her emotional burst.

They can’t explain about what really
occured to themselves.
So you guys also… better not try to
understand too.

Avril Lavigne said in her lyrics:

I hate it when a guy doesn’t understand
Why a certain time of month
I don’t want to hold his hand

Now, do you understand?

All these are based on a book written
by Allan & Barbara Pease

(Why men don’t listen and
Women can’t read maps)

More… about sport, now…

We all like watching sport, sometimes
we also play the game.

Sports are the decent form of
hunting, war, survival instinct.

Most sports began in 19th century,
after Industrial Revolution. People
didn’t go hunting ever since,
they work in factories or offices then.

But the desire to compete, to defeat,
to show that you’re better than other
individual, or team… still exist.

Sports are the war in peace.

They want to show that they can be:

faster, higher, stronger
(citius, altius, fortius)

Most sports contained elements of:

Walk, run, jump, throw, kick, hit,
aim, smash, combat, duel or strategy.

At land, air, or on and in the water; swim,
dive, row, sail, etc.

Personal or collectively.

To outrun, outwit or outstrength
others. To win, to earn medals, cups
and prize of money. For pride and
achievement.

Athletes are idolized, cause they
show strength or talent of survival.
Men envy them, women fell in love
to them (male athletes).

The key of attractions are still the
same, only slight differences adjusted
in modern era.

Men who are idolized are those who are:

Good hunters, can provide food.
= Diligent worker, can provide money.

Strong, survivor and win in competitions.
= in one word, masculine!

Leader, have status, respected
= still the same, popular and famous

Entertaining, fun, romantic
= that’s why actors and male singers
are idolized!

Have you ever wonder…

What women want?

-Touch, not always sexually intended
-Sincere compliment,
-Sense of humor,
-A bouquet of flowers,
-Build trust in each other,
-Sweet words,
-Poetry,
-Romantic SMS,
-Undivided loyalty,
-Jewelry (diamond!),
-Being idolized, the centre of
your attention, your world and
always be your inspiration,
-And… many more!

Men? What they want?

-Come to him, naked.

Ha! What else?

-Bring/cook his favourite food
-Toys, electronic gadgets
-Tickets to watch favourite sport team

We’re different and that’s why
we need each other.

Even…we fall in love! And start dating,
and get married.

Wow!

PROVERBS 30:18-19, read that in the Bible.

Love… when it comes, our brain
becoming more active.

Three main hormones are released
and caused us to feel…

-Dopamine =joy and fun
-Norephinephrine =courage and thrilled
-Serotonin =creative and imaginative

Read "What is it?" in my previous BLOG
to understand more about it.

There are two phrases to describe
how love begins:

Opposite attracts!
Differences create tension and to
make each other becoming more complete.

We have so much in common!
Similarities makes us feel closer
and compatible.

After that …

What?

After marriage, then sex is the next
important thing!

Men are aroused with what they SEE.

Women… depend on what they SENSE
(voice, touch, scent) and of course,
their MOOD!

When making love, males are more
being the dominating figure,
it’s more like a prove or recognition
that the lady is really belong to him,
and to earn satisfaction
(ejaculation!)

For women, the sense of being together
is more important, and also the touches,
hugs, kisses and sweet-words.

Men need 30 seconds to go.
Women took
30 minutes just to be ready.

Let’s skip the detail…

The most difficult part of being
a woman is to select the right man
to be her husband.

And for men, the hardest part is
to keep commitment, promise,
pledge and vow. To be in love
with one woman as a couple.
To be responsible, to work and
be the provider for his family.

Instinctively, human are like other
animals… the males are dominant
and can mate with many females.

Marriage (culturally and
anthropologically) are formed from
customs and norms.

Men can fight for women, or worse…
kill each others too!

That’s why early people create
rituals and law

"One woman for each man."

Some religions restrict men to
have more than one wives.
Some religions said it is OK,
as long as the men can treat all
his ladies fairly.

Also when people die, they soon
realize, the dead can no longer stay
with those who still alive in the house.

They must be separated, buried,
returned to the earth, also
to avoid germs spread in the house.

Then belief system, cult, or early
religions were born. To explain what
will happen to the souls after they die.
And to arrange the rituals.

Some of the teachings are written down
and become sacred texts in modern days.

Religion, for women is the search of
a father figure, who will be her
protector. Mostly, women are more
religious cause most religion
describe GOD as having masculine
traits.

For men, they see GOD as the one
keep watching him, and ready to
punish whenever they did wrong.
It depends on how he interacts
with his father figure.

Some religions depict the divine
as having both masculine and feminine
side, to help the males to be able to
receive GOD who can also be
a loving partner, instead of
rival or big-boss up there.

Marriage, in almost every religion,
has a divine purpose.

-To protect the couple from being
infected with germs, due to promiscuity.

-To build a family, to create the
next generations (children)

-To show us that each of us are
searching the part of us that is missing.

- To make each others become complete
in one-ness. As woman and man.

Marriage can be seen as a little
part of "doing GOD’s duty" on earth,
done by each couple (man with woman)

Done by mothers:
- To bring new life.
- To show unconditional love, with
hope of best for the children.

And by the fathers:
-To create and to build new generation,
by giving lesson, direction, command
and discipline.
-To be the provider, the one who
work and give blessing daily and
to make sure that life goes on.

Men.. women.. each of them think
about each other this way:

"Can’t live with them,
can’t live without them."

What is happiness?

Thursday, July 5th, 2007

To have what you inquire
And to always want it
It begins with desire
Now let the lightbulb to lit

To write again today
And to describe this word
It begins with what you say
Now let this be recited and heard

Happiness is in our mind
To be glad and to rejoice
It is what you always find
And it is our choice

Happiness is in our heart
To know that love is growing
It is what you must start
And to be shared, overflowing

Some said it’s when you smile
Or to laugh when something’s funny
But it only lasts a while
You can’t buy it with money

Some said it’s when you cry
Or to meet again your loved one
But it stays and won’t quickly fly
You can’t compare with simple fun

It’s reflected in your eye
With the strength to lift me up
This endless feeling won’t dry
As we filled each other’s cup

It’s what I try to write
With rhymes all written here too
This page is where I earn insight
As happiness I found in you
